Coffee

doodle, ink, Meredith's poetry, sketch book

I stare into my coffee in the morning

Black, then creamy brown

Milky, like a baby’s skin

And all I see is nothing

Not the day before me or the night behind me, but nothing

I sip and taste the slight bitterness and acidity

It heats my chest

It spreads

that warm nothing

A lazy morning feeling

languid and slow

I take a longer drink and then let the liquid settle

Enjoying the peace and quiet

A song comes on breaking the silence but not ending my quiet feeling

It makes me think of people I love and home

I feel safe

Another sip of coffee

My dog rubs against my leg

I thaw

I move

I wake up

I finish my coffee and start the day

I was sitting outside

Meredith's poetry

Last weekend, I was up in Pennsylvania visiting family.  They live in the woods next to a lake.  I was sitting on their dock after going kayaking and I was contemplating the water and the trees and the insects.  What I got out of it is the following poem.  Unfortunately I did not take any pictures of the place I was at but maybe you can apply what you read to somewhere you have been.  Enjoy!

Nothing is still

I feel underlying currents

I see fractals playing on the surface

A heart beat, the breeze

A slight rocking

A life force moving through the trees

Moving underneath the surface…of your eyelids

Bright colors in nature

A vibration, a dragonfly

Nothing is still

These seemingly static surfaces

I feel their pulses

So alive

They move unseen

In Memory Of

Something That Must Be Shared

When light shines, it expands

I have seen it wash over dark places

I have seen things go from silhouettes to full blown colors

So bright and expressive that my mind and heart burst

I could not contain sunlight, only reflect it

Something that must be shared

Like love and laughter

Like tears and sadness

Something that illuminates how we’re human

I float freely in contained space

I float freely in contained space

holding onto edges at lane’s ends

and staying within the lines

A safe place for me to think

I see more clearly under aqua blue

than when looking at mirrored reflections above

Buoyant feelings bubble out my throat

As each unspoken number brings me closer to the next turn

Bursting forth and slowing down

I turn my head for air

Kicking waves behind me

A few more silent numbers to chant before I finish

Day moving on its tiptoes

Sufjan Stevens comes on and

droplets of sound become turning signals

and

people crossing streets

and

wing beats of pigeons

and

the day moving on its tiptoes through the city streets

I feel the sound of sun rays

playing through windows on my face

out of Egypt, into the great laugh of mankind,

and I shake the dirt from my sandals as I run

the title says as though I’m in the wilderness

I have a show coming up in January, so the next posts will be based on the theme of the show(my poetry with illustrations).  Looking forward to your feedback. 🙂

Lugubrious

Lugubrious

I have such heavy words

Weighing on my head

They lumber around

Going unsaid

I feel rather lead-footed

A bit down in the mouth

If only these heavy words had a way of coming out

Some people think me sober

Absorbed in something glum

If only there was something light

That I could ponder on

Maybe some people have effervescent thoughts

But I think for now the word I have is lugubrious

Hawaii

Helicopter ride in Kauai

The Pacific

The Pacific Ocean has no memories

But I remember it

Large and blue and beautiful

It filled my eyes

So deep and fierce at green beaches

It threatened to pull me under

At other places it was calmer

Monk seals and sea turtles taking naps

And then from above It moved and changed

I watched its waves go from aqua to black

The Pacific Ocean has no memories

For a time I thought there was nothing else
